There’s one thing that’s inevitable about having a newborn—you’re going to need a lot of stuff including sleep sacks and formula, but the thing you’ll go through the most is diapers. With so many different brands and types out there, it’s hard to pick the absolute best diapers.

Whether you've got a newborn or a toddler, or dealing with blowouts or a baby on the go, we’ve vetted the best diapers out there so you can find the right one for your baby, lifestyle and budget.

What to look for in the best diapers

According to Dr. Whitney Casares, board-certified pediatrician, maternal child health expert, and author of Doing It All, you should look for a diaper that fits snugly against your child’s skin. “The diapers should be soft and also able to stretch. This helps avoid irritation to your baby's skin.”

She suggests avoiding any diapers that have added scents or dyes. “They should also not include any parabens, bisphenols, phthalates, flame-retardant chemicals or fluorinated compounds known as PFAs.”

While Dr. Casares notes some of the best baby diapers may be branded as “natural,” they may still contain substances that can be harmful or harsh on a baby's skin. Be sure to read all labels and packaging.

Coterie

Having a baby with sensitive skin can be a challenge. Not only are they more prone to diaper rashes, but it can often be hard to figure out what exactly irritates them. If that’s an issue for your baby, Coterie is a fantastic choice. Free of more than 200 chemicals, it’s unlikely to contain something that creates an issue.

Even the wettest diapers are no match for this brand—Coterie has a super absorbent core with 70% more liquid capacity than other diapers and 12-hour leak protection. This helps babies sleep longer because a wet diaper won’t rouse them from slumber. It absorbs four times faster than other diapers, which minimizes the likelihood of a diaper rash.

How we chose the best diapers

It's no secret that new diaper styles, prints and materials are released each year. That's why we take a lot of time looking at every style, model and new release on the market each year. We go to town evaluating all the top brands and Indie faves on the market to bring you a definitive list of blowout-blocking nappies you can truly trust.

To make it to our best diapers list, all brands had to be relatively easy to find and purchase. We looked at leak protection, how well each design handled large blowout loads (when babies start solids, things can get wild) and comfortable waistbands.

We also looked at overall adjustability, leg openings, the quality and sustainability of the materials used and overall price. After all, babies are super expensive and saving pennies on something you'll toss in the garbage makes sense. We don't believe in tossing money into the crapper (see what we did there?).

Our editors tried these diapers on their own little ones, reporting back with the nitty-gritty details you need to know. Yes, we soiled some onesies along the way—but the pursuit of hardcore diaper journalism was worth it. You're welcome.
