Sleeping on your stomach may not be ideal, but for some, it’s the only way to get a good night’s sleep—and when you’re a parent, sleep is of the essence. The best mattress for stomach sleepers is supportive, firm and provides all-important pressure relief, while keeping you cool and comfortable throughout the night.
Of course, if you’re pregnant sleeping on your stomach is a big no-no, but for postpartum moms just trying to enjoy some shut-eye, you’ll want a high-quality mattress that’s not a pain in the neck or back.
We spoke with two chiropractors to get the scoop on what to look for in the best mattress for stomach sleepers, including excellent kids' mattresses and toddler mattress options if your little one also loves snoozing on their belly.
"[The] keep your spine in a neutral alignment and prevent your hips and belly from sinking in,” says Chiropractor Matthew Cavanaugh of Cavanaugh Chiropractic Clinic.
“Sleeping on your stomach isn’t great for your spine but picking the right mattress can minimize the impact and make for a more comfortable sleep,” echos Chiropractor and Osteopath Dr. Liza Egbogah. But before you buy, here are the key features to consider:
If you’re a stomach sleeper, Egbogah recommends a firm mattress you won’t sink into. “This will mean less pressure on your spine,” she notes. “It should have a minimal rebound or bounce and ideally have a firm core made out of a material like latex or dense foam so that you’re well supported.”
Cavanaugh agrees that a memory foam or latex mattress is best suited for stomach sleepers. “A firm memory foam offers a good amount of support while contouring to your body without feeling like you’re being swallowed by your mattress. Latex mattresses are usually firmer, a bit more supportive, and they offer similar relief to painful pressure points."
According to Cavanaugh, edge support, which essentially means how supportive and sturdy the perimeter of your mattress is, doesn’t usually matter if you’re a smaller person who sleeps in the middle of your bed. “However, if you’re larger than 130 pounds and share your bed, you may need to look at edge support,” he says.
“An unsupported perimeter that sinks when it’s used will impact how much surface area you can use, which is important because stomach sleepers tend to sprawl out and cover a larger area of the mattress.”
Stomach sleepers need a top layer of cushioning to accommodate the chest and stomach and to help avoid pressure points, notes Egbogah. “The amount of cushioning you need varies based on the size of your chest and stomach. The bigger the front, the thicker the cushioning should be so that these areas are comfortable,” she explains.
“Ideally, you don’t want more than three inches of cushioning so that you can still maintain the firmness of the mattress. A responsive memory foam top layer on top of more firm or dense foam, springs or latex can help provide both cushioning and support.”
“It can get quite warm when you’re sleeping on your stomach so it’s a good idea to pick a cooling or temperature-regulating mattress for a hot sleeper,” says Egbogah. “These are usually made out of naturally cooling core materials like latex or gel foam and have top layers of breathable fabrics like organic cotton or bamboo.”
The Zenhaven comes highly recommended by both Cavanaugh and Egbogah and boasts an impressive 4.8-average star rating with hundreds of positive reviews.
"Made mostly of organic latex with five zones to enhance lumbar support while still providing pressure relief, this is a great choice for stomach sleepers," says Egbogah. "The cover is made from organic cotton, which is very breathable, so combined with a cooling latex core you won’t overheat with this mattress."
The Zenhaven features a flippable, dual-sided design so you can find your comfort zone. However, Cavanaugh tell us that the gentle firm side is best suited for stomach sleepers, as it's more supportive, responsive, and 18% firmer than the luxury plush side.
We love that you can flip it over during pregnancy for adequate support and pressure relief when you're confined to sleeping on your side though!
This top-rated mattress is free of all potentially harmful emissions, chemicals, and pollutants, so you can rest assured you and your family are only sleeping on the best of the best. It's also hypoallergenic, which is good to know if you co-sleep or are considering the Zenhaven for your child's bed.
If you're looking for a quality mattress that won't break the bank, Cavanaugh likes the Lucid Firm Memory Foam Mattress for stomach sleepers. "It has a 6.5-inch sturdy base foam layer with a 1.5-inch layer of memory foam, which provides comfort and pressure relief," he says.
The bottom layer, which is comprised of bamboo charcoal, also contains hypoallergenic properties to naturally eliminate odors so your mattress always smells fresh and clean, making it an excellent choice for sweaty, smelly teens. The ventilated top gel memory foam layer helps regulate body temperature too for a comfortable night's sleep.
Best of all, the mattress is compatible with adjustable bases, slatted bed frames and platform beds without the need for box springs.
"It's shipped directly to your house and is compressed and rolled for a simple setup," says Cavanaugh of this tip for choosing a mattress. "It just needs to be unrolled and allowed to expand for one to three days before use."
From the time babies can roll onto their bellies, many prefer stomach sleeping over back sleeping. The Helix Kids Mattress is the gold standard of kids' mattresses with a flippable, dual-sided design that can grow with them and offer the proper support no matter their age or preferred sleeping position.
Even though the mattress has a softer side designed for children ages eight and 12, Egbogah recommends sticking to the firmer side for stomach sleepers. This will keep the spine better aligned, thanks to premium springs and memory foam, as they snooze and prevent the body from sinking in too much.
Other kid-friendly features we love are the breathable, hypoallergenic cover for maximum airflow, the hygienic microbe shield to shield against yucky, odor-causing bacteria, and the plant-based water-repellent finish to protect against stains and water damage — because kids are messy.
"This gel memory foam mattress boasts five layers to provide support and comfort where you need it," says Cavanaugh, who personally recommends this popular bed-in-a-box mattress for stomach sleepers.
The cover features innovative cooling technology so you sleep comfortably no matter the season, and the medium-firm memory foam ensures minimal motion transfer, which is perfect for parents who are constantly waking through the night to tend to kids and don't want to disturb their partner.
The foams are CertiPUR-US Certified, meaning they're low VOC and free of heavy metals, phthalates, formaldehyde, and other harmful toxins and chemicals. It also comes with a forever warranty and a 365-night home trial so you can stomach sleep for a full year to ensure you're fully supported and waking without aches and pains.
FYI: Nectar is great for side and back sleepers if you like to switch things up. "It's like sinking into a marshmallow, but still firm enough that I can sleep on my stomach," writes one Amazon reviewer.
The Naturepedic EOS is the holy grail of organic mattresses and is 100% worth the splurge if you want a supremely comfortable, high-quality, eco-conscious mattress that can be fully customized now and years down the line.
"It has a great pillow top made of natural fibers to accommodate the front of your body while maintaining a firm latex core to provide support," says Egbogah. "All the materials are natural so it won’t hold heat and will keep you cool," she adds.
Each side is independently configurable too, so if you're a stomach sleeper you can opt for firm support, while your partner can choose something softer and more plush if they prefer. And everyone's spine stays properly aligned.
It's made with 100% GOTS-certified organic materials and without any fire retardants or added chemicals. If you don't love the way it feels, you can swap out layers for free within the first 90 days to create the dream mattress.
Bonus: You can pay to swap out layers years later if your comfort needs change or your mattress just needs a refresh. Because each side is separate, middle-of-the-night potty or snack breaks won't wake your partner.
The DreamCloud Premier Hybrid is Cavanaugh's top pick for couples because it properly supports different types of sleepers. "It's firm enough for the stomach sleeper but has a breathable cashmere blend cover that’s plush enough for a back or side sleeper. "The hybrid version also has extra thick coils around its perimeter for greater edge support," says Cavanaugh.
A dynamic gel foam transition layer helps promote proper spinal alignment, while a therapeutic gel-infused memory foam offers adaptive support, responsive contouring, and exceptional pressure relief for the neck, shoulders, back and hips. Plus, everything is made with CertiPUR-US certified foams so you can sleep better.
Sweaty sleepers can rest easier too. The entire mattress is breathable, helping regulate body temperature and encouraging deeper, more restorative sleep. Couples will appreciate the ability to toss and turn or get up at night without waking their partner, thanks to individually wrapped coils to minimize motion transfer. The entire thing is a dream!
Over 20,000 people agree this Zinus mattress is the dream. Not only is it extra affordable, but it's also extra firm and sturdy, thanks to the heavier gauge steel independent pocket innerspring. Perfect for stomach sleepers and plus-sized parents, this highly-rated mattress can support up to 250 pounds for the twin size and up to 500 pounds for Queen and above.
It's made using a combination of motion-isolating pocket springs and layers of soft comfort and durable high-density foam, topped with a quilted jacquard cover to wrap you in comfort. It arrives compressed in one box. Simply unroll it and allow it to expand for up to 72 hours before sleeping on it!
"This mattress is the best mattress I have owned to date," says one stomach sleeper. "It is incredibly firm but in the best way. It took one night to adjust to. It also has some give for when I roll onto my side or back. This has completely fixed my lower back problem in less than a week."
Cavanaugh calls this a "plush mattress that does not sacrifice support" and one of the "best luxury mattresses on the market." It's handmade in Los Angeles and features 17 (yes, you read that right!) luxe layers of natural and organic materials, as well as 2,419 individually-encased coils arranged in seven ergonomic zones for superior support and motion isolation.
You can choose your firmness level, but for stomach and back sleepers, Avocado recommends the medium model, which features three inches of GOLS-certified organic Dunlop latex.
"If we had known how much this mattress would transform our lives, we’d have bought one a long time ago," writes one reviewer. Another says, "It’s a very comfortable bed with the ability to be both slightly plush and firm at the same time. It’s great for sleeping on our back, stomach or sides."
Sleeping on your stomach can make you hot and bothered already. Add in some postpartum hormones and it's a recipe for some serious sweat. The LuxeBreeze combines innovative cooling technology with maximum pressure relief for your best night's sleep ever.
"It starts with a SmartClimate cover that's cool to the touch and a cooling layer that reacts to your body within minutes," explains Cavanaugh. "This mattress is also firm enough to support a stomach sleeper and its proprietary Tempur-Material is well known to relieve painful pressure points."
There's a heat-diffusing layer to absorb excess heat and added ventilation for optimum airflow. "I used to get serious lower back pain when I would sleep on my stomach due to it sinking in the bed but now my spine is aligned and no more pain," writes one reviewer. "And the cooling is great. It is no joke, I run hot when I sleep and this thing is the ticket to no night sweats."
